Evolving Perspectives on Womansplaining

Written By: Sandi MacCalla, Founder - LifeSkills Academy ~ 2/5/2024

Welcome back to this session on the ever-evolving landscape of workplace dynamics: effective communication! Today, we’ll dive into a crucial aspect: Womansplaining.

Fostering inclusivity and respect requires a deep understanding of communication nuances. Addressing Womansplaining allows us to create environments of collaboration, innovation, and mutual respect. We'll explore practical tips to handle these situations with grace and effectiveness for everyone involved.

Womansplaining: Reshaping Communication Dynamics

Womansplaining is the act of explaining information to men or female subordinates in a condescending or excessively detailed manner. Let's enhance this approach to improve this dynamic:

  • Begin by gauging others' knowledge on the topic.
  • Practice starting with the 'bottom-line' first and then delve into details, balancing clarity with brevity.
  • Allow breaks in your explanations for questions, exchange, or clarification.
  • Actively listen and be open to diverse perspectives. Encourage dialogue through questions and clarification.

For Men and Women:

  • Set boundaries by politely asserting your expertise.
  • Foster respect and exchange knowledge as you engage in relevant conversation.

For Leaders:

  • Cultivate a culture of mutual respect and active listening in team dynamics.
  • Provide training on effective communication to address and redirect womansplaining.

A Unified Approach to Workplace Communication

For All Participants:

  • Promote open communication where everyone's voice is heard.
  • Use "I" statements to express feelings and experiences without blame, shame, or sarcasm.

For HR Departments:

  • Implement training programs on evolving workplace communication dynamics.
  • Establish clear mechanisms for continuous improvement and growth.
