What Are the Most Critical Adulting Skills to Master?

Written By: Sandi MacCalla, Founder - LifeSkills Academy ~ 7/10/2023

Despite the whirling chaos of growing up, there is a way to cultivate and propagate key adulting skills. We’ll cover 10 primary ones in the weeks to come that build a foundation of success for ourselves and our maturing youth.

BLOGPOST_AdultingSkillsToMaster07102023.jpgThe roadmap below keeps our sights on the adulting goals we need. It has a scenic route and a focused, time-efficient way to reach our destination. And there’s even a parking lot for those who need to redirect.

Here is the Adulting Skills Roadmap with the top 10 skills in order of importance:

  • Financial management: budgeting, saving, and investing.

  • Time management and organization.

  • Communication and conflict resolution.

  • Personal care: physical and mental health.

  • Problem-solving and decision-making.

  • Responsibility and accountability for one's actions.

  • Adaptability and flexibility in the face of uncertainty.

  • Personal motivation and discipline.

  • Forming and maintaining healthy relationships.

  • Basic home maintenance and repair skills.

Now that we know the targets, we can define goals into manageable steps to conquer and master. This roadmap is not just for kids. It’s the ongoing framework to experience success and confidence as we each grow. We are built to excel in these skills in all our life stages.

Couple the above skills with the LifeSkills Score Card posted on 1/30/23 - YOUR LIFE SKILLS REPORT CARD - to get a sense of areas needing more knowledge.

  • Independence

  • Responsibility

  • Resilience

  • Empathy

  • Self-Regulation

  • Adaptability

  • Resourcefulness

  • Communication

  • Problem-Solving

  • Collaboration

Doing your own evaluation identifies what would make the greatest impact on growing your success – as well as on others you serve/help. Learning and taking action in these areas helps to make course corrections before ‘hitting the wall’ in your progress. You can get to your desired destination directly and even enjoy the journey.
