2023 Quick Modern Manners Update

Written By: Sandi MacCalla, Founder - LifeSkills Academy ~ 6/5/2023

Bringing our ever-changing lifestyles in line with the times keeps us on target to respect others. With the fast pace of progress, it’s easy to jump onto new practices, disconnect with what seems irrelevant, and miss what is important: to honor and respect all in our transactions.

Being practical and easy to wear, ear pods are easy to forget.

  • When you’re wearing them and not actually listening to anything, others may wonder if they’re interrupting.

Respond to all those invitations and important messages
Technology makes life easier with multiple ways to communicate. It may be challenging to keep up with the constant pings.

  • Respond quickest to ones where friends offer help or invite you to events.

Looking people in the eye
This is basic, but this doesn’t just apply to teens!

  • When you’re chatting with someone, be courteous. Put distractions aside and focus on the person you’re with.

When Leaving Voice messages
You can say more in a quick message. Others might not be able to listen to a lengthy voice note when needed.

  • Send a quick email explaining your intended message.

When dressing for an occasion
Our clothing choices are a great way to show the importance we give an occasion. Example: Because we want to respect the Lord, we don’t show up to church in our PJs.

  • If we’re going somewhere that deserves respect, take the time to dress accordingly.

When a click-happy event happens
Thanks to cell phones, we capture many of life’s moments. But we may be capturing a moment and not living it. We may also interrupt others trying their best to live what’s going on.

  • It’s unnerving when your kids’ photos are shared on social media without your permission. It can also be a legal matter. Only post photos that others (including your own family) agree to.

“One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.”  ~ Bryant H. McGill
