Some of the most exciting “distraction attractions” sweeping the country inspire finding or even creating your own. Whether you’re looking for an active escape, a creative outlet, or a chance to meet like-minded people, there’s a growing trend of joy-sparking experiences waiting for you.

Unwinding and reconnecting with joy in uncertain times has become more important than ever. Whether engaging in a no-phone social club, picking up a hands-on hobby, or enjoying a unique hybrid hangout, there are ways to rediscover simple pleasures and new relationships.

Trends from Yelp’s recent research show a surge in activities that prioritize engagement and personal well-being:

Social meetups are making a comeback, with online searches for

  • chess clubs up 47%, book clubs up 26%, and local run clubs up 82%.
  • People are also embracing gut-friendly foods, driving up searches for kefir (+58%), probiotic soda (+49%), and bone broth (+24%).

  • Adult summer camps and wellness retreats are the new vacation alternative, with searches up 347% for adult camps and 83% for fitness retreats.
  • Hybrid hangouts—like laundromat bars (+347%) and book café bars (+85%)—are upgrading our everyday experiences.
