Let's explore some special customs of these everyday favorites, from the last slice of pizza to great chili debates to the classic salty-sweet combo of fries dipped in milkshakes.
1. Pizza: From Pineapple to the Last Slice
The universal favorite and the source of impassioned debates.
- Pineapple on Pizza: This topic is the GREAT DIVIDE among friends and families. If you love it, own it! If you don’t, just order a half-and-half pie. After all, pizza is about bringing people together, not tearing them apart.
- The Last Slice: Sharing the last slice? Not likely. The move here is to ask, “Anyone want to arm-wrestle for it?” If no takers, it’s all yours.
- Utensils or Hands: While pizza is traditionally eaten by hand, utensils are fair game for scalding-hot slices or deep-dish varieties.
- Folded or Flat: A taco-style pizza slice works when we multi-task and nosh-on-the-run. If, however, you’re table-side, a hand-held slice assures all those flavors meet in a single bite without your wearing any prizes on your clothes or lap. Start with the pointed end.
Famous Quote: “You can't make everyone happy. You're not pizza.” – Anonymous
2. Chili: Beans or No Beans?
Chili etiquette begs the age-old question: to bean or not to bean?
- Beans: Texans will argue real chili doesn’t have beans, but outside of Texas, beans are a popular addition. However, in Cincinnati, don’t send your chili back when it arrives attacking a plate of spaghetti.
- Heat: Both sides agree that chili is best when spiced to perfection.
- Toppings: Cheese, sour cream, avocado, and/or green onions are chili’s BFFs. Customize yours without assuming everyone loves the same combo.
- Sharing Chili: Unlike pizza or fries, chili isn’t shared. It’s all about personal portions, so no double-dipping drama here.
Famous Quote: "Wish I had time for just one more bowl of chili." – Kit Carson
3. Fries and Milkshakes: The Salty-Sweet Power Couple
There’s something magical about this pairing that keeps it timeless.
- Why It Works: The saltiness of fries contrasts beautifully with the creamy sweetness of a milkshake. It’s a flavor bomb for your taste buds.
- Dipping Fries in Milkshakes: While controversial to some, it’s a match made in diner-heaven for those who enjoy mixing flavors (strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, etc.). Just don’t force it on the purists.
- Sharing Fries: Fries are generally a personal affair. While communal fries might work at a party, the fries on your plate are ‘hands-off’ unless invited!
Famous Quote: “French fries. I love them. Some people are chocolate and sweets people. I love French fries. That and caviar.” – Cameron Diaz
The Bottom Line
These foods are beloved not just for their flavors but for the spirited debates and traditions they inspire. Whether you’re eyeing the last slice, customizing your chili, or savoring the salty-sweet bliss of fries dipped in your milkshake, the best etiquette is savoring the moment and respecting others’ unique tastes.
